About Us
When you research the meaning of joy, you will find it described as the emotion evoked by well-being, a state of happiness, or a source or cause of delight. That is what Joy of Movement is all about. Located in the historic Chatham Mills near downtown Pittsboro, our unique 2000 ft. studio offers a wide variety of classes and events designed to enhance personal well-being and create meaningful connections through movement, music, and meditation.
Collaboratively managed by a dedicated group of volunteer board members and teachers—under the fiscal sponsorship of Abundance NC—Joy of Movement strives to create a sense of belonging and build a strong, healthy community. With an unwavering commitment to inclusion, we welcome and seek out those diverse in abilities, age, socioeconomic status, race, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, and religion.
The studio’s gorgeous wood floor, high ceiling, exposed vintage brick, wood beams, and huge windows with views of our native pollinator garden serves as a wonderful, calming space for our teachers and students. So whether you are seeking to tone your body, transform your mind, or nurture your spirit, Joy of Movement offers more than 50 classes and numerous special events  each month where beginners and drop-ins are welcome.

Our History

The Joy of Movement is a story of transformation. Lynda and Steve Heymen, both psychologists, launched the studio in 2011 and were instrumental in building a loyal following. In 2015, the Heymen’s joined a dedicated group of teachers and students who mobilized to continue the studio under the fiscal sponsorship of the Abundance Foundation. Abundance sponsors more than a dozen projects that are working to build more resilient communities.

Our Garden

Looking out the studio’s windows, you will find Joy of Movement’s beautiful garden where native pollinator plants provide a tranquil habitat for birds, bees, and butterflies. The garden, lovingly maintained by our teachers and students, is a special community gathering place enjoyed by all visitors to Chatham Mills.
